Cruising Formal

Hal and Sharon cruised the Caribbean aboard the Norwegian Dream January 23-30, 2000. They visited San Juan and the El Yunque rain forest in Puerto Rico; the countries St. Lucia and Antigua; Tortolla and Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands; and St. Croix and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The cruise was all it's cracked up to be.
  • Dine in a four star restaurant three times a day (if you want to: there are other options as well). Midnight buffet (which I slept through, but Sharon went once, because it was all chocolate and she's a chocoholic: she has a sweatshirt which says, "I want it all, but I'll settle for some chocolate ;-)).
  • We really enjoyed the island hopping. The ship would sail all night and dock during the day, so we got to visit seven different islands, all interestingly different and the same.
  • The ship had plenty of activities and entertainment. We participated in a sports program (and got T-shirts!) and went to the shows.
  • The cabin was perfectly adequate, not all that small.

It wasn't even all that expensive. Leaving out the air fares, it was about $2200 for the week, about what you'd pay at a resort that doesn't go anywhere. But of course there are the extras: getting there... San Juan hotel... excursions... tips... pet care... what you buy... that added up to $3000 more. Money is in the mind of the beholder. Is all how you look at it.

* This was the Captain's last cruise before retirement. He was on vacation when the Norwegian Dream collided with a barge in the English Channel in August 1999. The ship was repaired and back in service by October 1999.
