It's a scandal that both political parties some years ago chose non-negotiable positions on abortion. Pro-choice and pro-life. Humpf. Slogans.
Slogans drove the debate to a never-ending stalemate, each side offering extreme solutions. So now we have the specter of FOCA, which tramples upon people’s consciences. This is countered with the Human Life amendment, which is unacceptable under our system of government because it proposes to constitutionalize particular private moral views.
Because the issue was so highly politicized, a practical solution addressing the problem of too many abortions was next to impossible to achieve. Obama is right that we need to change the nature of the debate.
Nobody likes abortion. The important thing is to bring the numbers down. A pox on ideological political correctness of either color, red or blue!
